I agree with Dave about the fins. I have a 498 with 50 hp merc with fins and it planes pretty well when the bottom of the boat is clean of weed and limpets. Sometimes when there are a few on board it is hard to get on the plane and it helps when I send the biggest of us up front of the boat, that ...

I have an old merc 50 hp and will get it on the plane if not many people on board. More than two 13 stone blokes and you just get a big bow wave. I suggest lightening your boat and trim by getting some weight in the front.

If your over fifty saga do a very good insurance and are flexible. My shet 498 is in harbour all year and insured fully comp March to October and third party for the rest, cost under £100.

I have a shetland 498 and it states maximum engine size 50 hp. I have noticed that a lot of people have 60 and 70hp engines on the same boat, is this safe?

Hi there...Does anyone know where I can buy 2 stroke oil in larger than one litre bottles, and is there any other choice than quicksilver. I have seen others advertised...but are they any good? I have an old 50 horse murcury which still runs very well. All advice would be welcome.

Happy to post some pics of the outside. The back end is pretty tidy but with flaking old paint and is next on the agenda. Also I am going to remove the covering on the front and paint with blue antislip this will also be on the walkway on the side of the boat. Will put some pics up when fineshed ...
