See if you can find your serial number on this list of US and canadian outboards. It may be one of the Belgian built motors though

Some outboards have oversized gearboxes and props for heavy boats, usually called big foot or high thrust, but i think mercury call them CT. You probably don't have one so need to make sure any replacement bits are right.

A quick google shows the 2 stroke 50hp and 60hp shared two powerheads in the 90's, and probably much else. The standard was a 3 cyl 849cc and the bigfoot was a 3 cyl 965cc.
The serial no.s for the 849 started OD and the bigfoot OG
The 70hp was an 1165cc head, so the gearbox is probably different.

So quick update.
Took the gearbox off, and found that the drive shaft really struggled to turn, and when it did, it really felt like it was grinding. Took as much apart as I could, but could not get the propshaft and carrier out for love nor money.
Ended up taking it to the engineer to remove, he confirmed that the forward gear was missing teeth and the carrier was corroded. Quote to fix 1100 pounds for parts. Which confirmed my earlier suspicion, why he didn't suggest that before scaring me with, need a new box. Anyway, managed to find a mariner gearbox on ebay second hand. For far less, its a risk, and its silver, but its worth a shot. If I get one season out of it, I'll be happy, and it gives me time to sort out a replacement. Or maybe I won't need to.
Anyway, thanks to everyone for your advice.
Next up, lots of sanding and filling and sanding and filling
