SHETLAND OWNERS ASSOCIATION

This Summer (if you remember what one of those are) we would like to explore the River Fal for a Week. Having inspected the Premieir Marina at Falmouth and found it to our liking. I have a question... Can we in our 570 navigate up to Truro and if so is there somewhere we can moor overnight with walk ashore to allow us to explore. Happy to be tide dependant, there is always a pub to while time away.

If you live there are there any other places on the way up to stay and explore?

If there are any ickle places, marinas, harbours on the seaboard we could visit too , please let us have your advice. Happy to drop anchor but for the time being we dont have a tender

Mylor is a lovely little marina, with pretty good launching facilities including a tap by the slip to flush your engine and wash the trailer, if you have a good vehicle to get you back up the steep lanes when you leave. One downside to anywhere around the fal is the tendency to find someone wanting payment for every little thing you and your boat, trailer or car do.

we are based in falmouth ourselves with our 570 CERVELYAN . we quite often go up the fal as far as Malpas a small village about a mile from Truro .You can go all the way to truro its nav bouyed all the way but if you drift off the channel slightly you could end up on the mud for hours.top tip is to follow in the wake of one of the Enterprise passenger ferries. you`ve probably only got enough water about 2 hours either side of high water.Malpas marine have pontoons.probably have to book an overnight stay though.its literally a 2 minute walk up the hill from the marina to the Heron Inn where good food and ales await you and an outside seating area where you can look back down the river.perfect on a summers evening.on your way up to Malpas you will pass laid up shipping .vessells up to 50 000 tonnes. the King Harry Ferry that runs across the river on chains and further on The smugglers cottage where allied forces embarked for the D Day landings.they also have pontoons there or visitor moorings.there`s also food and drink available.mylor has plenty of pontoon berths at all states of the tide.however falmouth marina you maybe stuck for water near low tide.depending on where they can accomodate you.But i`m sure they will reassure you.
Falmouth Harbour Commissioners have visitor pontoons attatched to North Quay a 2 minute walk from the main street and loads of restaurants.Launching is available nearby at Falmouth watersports centre right in front of The National Maritime Museum .reccomend you have a look in there.
St Mawes across the Carrick roads is worth a look but no pontoons im afraid.
