I'm planning on putting together a tool kit that will live on board permanently. Would anyone care to share what they carry with them to get me started ?

Depends on your craft and engine power ie outboard or inboard, petrol or deisel

To start your list

Gaffer Tape
Hammer
WD40

Pliers
set of spanners open and ring
screwdrivers
adjustable wrench
spray oil

Add spare spark plugs and spanner, spare/emergency starter rope to the list.

Assorted fuses

Good point. I've got a 85hp Yamaha two stroke and a Mariner 4hp four stroke aux.

a volt meter! vital
something to clean the leads connecting to the spark plugs
socket set
pliers longnose, standard and wire
cable ties
fuses
grease ( marine)
rags
wd40
a can of any of the brands of easy start/ carb cleaner
jubilee clips
philips screw driver and standard screw drivers
small bags for screws/ bolts ( money bags are ideal)
oh and a big bigger would be you aux engine

yes an aux engine is must or you will piss off the RNLI!

on a plus point your aux does not need to be that big unless you have v high currents so a honda 2.3 or a nissan engine ( mariner mercury tohatsu) 3.5 will work well for most people on here.

re the pull cord. yes if 20hp or less and please send me a link to the video anyone trying to pull start a 70 upward!

re sockets you an get away with an 8, 10, 17, 19 for most jobs

oh and all that will fit in a walking boot bag as that is what mine is in and I use it as ballast.
