SHETLAND OWNERS ASSOCIATION

As part of my refurb of Meggy Moo , my Shetland 535, I am wondering whether I need to have a canopy, or can I get away with just a tonneau cover?

It seems to me that a tonneau will be needed for towing because I don't think towing with a full canopy in place would be a good idea so that means you need both. But if I only use the boat in fair weather (yes, I'm a fair-weather boater!) do I need a canopy at all?

Thoughts and experiences welcomed.

I find the canopy as useful in the sun as much as in the rain. It's good to get some shade on the deck when you're spending a day at anchor fishing.

Maybe a little Bimini cover might be OK for you?

Definitely don't tow her with a canopy up though!

Agreed on not towing with the canopy up! I even take the canopy down if I'm going to move at any kind of decent speed out on the water.

I personally own a cover and a canopy. The canopy stays up while I'm moored at home on the River Soar, but the cover gets used when I'm towing the couple of times per year I take the boat elsewhere.

As mentioned, the canopy is really useful for really sunny days also. Plus, it's always good to have anyway, knowing how quickly the weather can change in this country!
