SHETLAND OWNERS ASSOCIATION

Hi to all. This is my first post so a very warm hello to all SOA members.

I would really appreciate some info from current/past Shetland 27 owners on the subj of petrol fuel consumption. We're considering the purchase of a Shetland 27 with 50hp outboard as our first boat and for use on the non-tidal Thames, based at one of the marinas between Penton Hook and Caversham.

The reasoning behind the outboard is the extra space afforded for sleeping accommodation under the cockpit as well as the reduction in noise and vibration. However, I'm very well aware of the lack of petrol availability actually on the river further upstream and I really don't fancy the idea of hoiking jerry cans through towns and villages to get to the nearest filling station, let alone pouring fuel directly into the tank from a can. So realistically we'd be filling the tanks full at the marina (even @ marina prices) and relying on the range of a full tank to do a reasonable return trip.

So, the question is roughly how far (in miles and/or hours) would one full tank of unleaded take us? The '27 we've been looking at has 2 x 5 gallon tanks and has a Mariner 50hp engine.

first off is the engine 2 stroke or 4 stroke? 2 strokes gulp gasoline like nobody's business.

this still comes down to speed, tide, wind, revs etc sorry to be pain but unlike cars there are far more factors invloved. ps I would keep the OB at less than 4800 and then as a very rough 1.2 m per L more if around 2k revs and speed as stated depend on so many other factors my answer would be misleading
