SHETLAND OWNERS ASSOCIATION

Hi from a newbie.

My partner and I should be the proud new owners of a 2010 Shetland 27 on Wednesday .

We are upgrading from a same age Viking 20 which we have enjoyed very much as our first boat.

We are looking forward to many new adventures on the Norfolk Broads with the Shetland and hope to see some of you on our travels

Will post some pictures up once we have been handed the keys.

Congratulations on your new purchase.

I am currently looking at a either a Shetland 27 or a Viking 26.

Where did you buy your Shetland and is it an inboard or outboard?

If you viewed other Shetlands what problems if any did you find with them?

It would be good to hear of your experiences of your new boat compared to your Viking.

Hi Simon,

It is the inboard Yanmar 55HP engine.

It is the first one we viewed and it is in imaculate condition so we didn't hang around.

We are picking it up this week and I shall post plenty of photos and let you know how she handles on our run back to our moorings .
It's about two hours so should get a good idea compared to our Viking

Hope you enjoy your new boat.

I am looking at the outboard option due to where we do most of our cruising.

I am leaning towards the Shetland 27 as my wife and I like the layout especially the bow area of the saloon for socialising as opposed to the offset bunk layout in the Viking 26 and the storage possibilities in the cockpit of the Shetland. Had a look at a few but just outside our budget but as we still have our trusty Viking 23 we are happy to wait until the right one comes along.

Picked 'Riverlight' up Friday and spent a fantastic weekend on board even if it was flippin' freezing outside

By lunchtime the ice had melted and we went out for three hours up the River Thurne for a lovely day on the water.

We are very happy with the fit and finish and the performance so far of the Shetland.
Will keep you all posted as our ownership continues, look forward to reading other peeps experiences and their photos as well

I see that you have covers over the hatches, secured by press studs. It is worth checking that you can still open the hatches from inside as the forward hatch in particular is usually classed as an escape hatch.

We opened all hatches up to check everything was okay before purchase .

But can you still open them with the covers in place?

They are only poppers, a bit of light upwards force is all that would be needed on a swift exit
