The right engine size !

Hello, I was wondering what size of engine it would take to get a Shetland Cadet planning? I was thinking of a 25Hp 4 stroke or 2 st. Looking at a Shetland broacher Its says the boat is 330 Kg. That’s not that heavy a boat. Although that’s for the open cabin version. I would think then the weekender would be a bit more. Any thoughts guys on this, please.

Hi,
The cadet is basically the 465? A 25hp won't be enough, 40hp would be just enough with 2 adults but pretty much always at wide open throttle and a wide open wallet at the petrol pump. 50hp would be right, and you should be able to comfortably hold the boat on the plane at 1/2 to 2/3 throttle and not pouring the petrol in with a bucket.

Hello again. Was just thinking about your answer. I am surprised at that . I did own a Shetland Sealark years ago and it planed with a 30hp 2 stroke. I cant seam to find spec on it now. But it was a good 200 kg heavier than a cadet.

Hi
A 2 stroke would always have much better acceleration than a 4stroke, and if an engine size/ boat weight combo is on the cusp of its capabilities, 2 may get up to revs when a 4 stroke wouldn't quite get there, BUT, there have been no new 2strokes built for 15 years, they are horrendous on fuel consumption especially when you skimp on hp and always have to run WOT, and spares are getting scarce. The smart money goes with 4stroke with hp to spare. Been there and got the Tshirt with underpowered 2strokes, and I've never looked back since i got a sensible sized 4stroke

Yes Dell good advice. I will stay away from a 2 stroke. That 30 evinrude I had on my sealark cost me a arm and a leg to run.

Yamaha still make 2 strokes.

I think it is illegal to sell new 2 strokes for pleasure use but allowed for certain commercial operations. An EU advertiser on ebay is selling small far eastern outboards with the proviso "that they are not for private use"???

US epa regs and EU regs have prevented the general sale of new 2strokes of more than about 2hp since 2005. I believe they are still made in larger sizes for use in Asia etc, usually by brands like Parsun, but i don't think the quality US or Japanese manufacturers are still in the game.

Does this also apply to the range of E-tech engines from Evinrude? I thought they were 2-stroke.
