SHETLAND OWNERS ASSOCIATION

I have been refitting a 535 and have yet to put it in the water. The outboard is a big heavy looking mariner 60. Also the transom seems to have been reinforced. But I can’t help think about the stresses on the boat while being transported on the road.

Is this something I should be worried about? Is there anything I can buy/make to reduce the stress of transportation?

the 535 hull is rated for a maximum 65hp engine so it should handle the weight no problem.
I have a 60hp mercury on mine and have had no trouble with transportation.

My Black Hawk also had a Mariner 60 2 stroke on it, mine had power tilt, & that supported it ok while towing. If no power tilt, don't rely on the simple prop to support the engine in the up position, use other means (wood "bars" etc.) To support it from the base of the bracket, & strap it down to make the whole thing rigid.

Don't forget that in UK it's an offence to transport the boat with an uncovered propeller.

Outboard has a full cover. Is it recommended to tie something like a hivis vest to the prop also?

The idea is to protect a pedestrian or a cyclist from injury if they happen to contact the blades of the propeller or skeg. Normally, its a padded bag covering the prop and skeg. If your outboard cover has this built in, you're good to go.

Right I see. No it’s not got any padding at the prop end I shall look into that thankyou!

The transom should take the weight, but make sure the trailer is supporting the transom, you need plenty of support underneath the transom or within about 4”, don’t have the boat hanging too far off the back of a trailer.
