Hi, I brought a shetland 535 as a project to work on, there are a few things that need replacing and im having trouble sourcing parts at reasonable prices. The parts I need are a front window, a pair of footplates (if thats what they are called) and 2 new side windows for the canopy. I am very new to the boating industry so I would appreciate any advice on how to get my boat back on the water, so far I have repainted the decking under the canopy, repainted the floor in the cabin and started to sort out the wiring. Any advice on passing the safety checks etc would be much appreciated. Also any ideas on how to kit out the cabin to make it look nice would be appreciated, I've brought some leatherette so I'm going to reupholster the seats and possibley add panels around the edge of the cabin also upholstered with leatherette. Any other ideas would be nice. Thanks in advance.

I think im in the same boat as you ! Literaly speaking , I just purchaced a 535 with a 60 Merc that needs some TLC , I will be watching this post for the same advice

solar vents work well if you want to keep the cabin nice and dry.

remember to fit a fishfinder even if you dont fish as it is great as a depth guage!

hi, I have a 9.9hp mercury outboard which was running but has been left for around 6 months. I have tried to start it again but it was not me that had it running before so I am unfamiliar with the starting procedure. When I try to start it I turn the switch to run, attach the fuel pipe and pump fuel into the engine, open the choke to the start position and then pull the cord but all that happens is that the engine whirs and then nothing else. Am I missing a step or could it be a battery problem or something? Thanks.

Im certainly no expert on outboards but have you got a spark at the plugs , or is there a starting inhibitor fitted on the controls that wont let you start it on gear ?
I started stripping my 535 this week and the plan is to get it into Bristol docks for a test in the spring of next year , But Im now realising its like a huge snowball restoring these boats , but good fun

sorry been recsuing a boat.

ok if you have a pull start there there is no battery problem so most common problems are

spark plugs so change these first
spar plug leads
clean/ replace fuel filter
check your fuel line hose and the bulb should be hard when primed

if none of the above ( and my real guess) is that you need to clean the carbs. 2 stroke petrol mixed with oil and left + general dirt soon blocks these up.

oh and not related but please change your gearbox oil

you could also just get it serviced. please see our clyde outboard site for prices so that you know how much your local dealer should be charging.

On a side note what is the material that the canopy windows are made out of as I need to make a couple of new ones.

Quick update, managed to get engine running, was me being an idiot and not opening choke properly. Thanks for the advice anyway though
