SHETLAND OWNERS ASSOCIATION

We bought our Shetland 500 just over a year ago. Being almost complete rookies when it comes to buying boats we've ended up learning things the hard way! We replaced the trailer and outboard this year and been slowly tending to some little bits and bobs needing doing. It's been a slow process as I've been abroad for most of the year, but it's all part of the fun! The colour is definitely not to my taste! I think that's next on the 'to do' list.
There was a bit of confusion with the boat type...500? Hobby? It only says 500 on the bulkhead, but I was under the impression that the 500 was a fishing boat design.


Here's a few pics of our most recent trip last weekend. Set off from Ardmair (about 5 miles north of Ullapool) to Bird Island in Loch Broom, NW highlands. The weather couldn't have been better.

Can anyone clear up the confusion regarding the model?
Secondly, we have a Mariner 40 EFI and a few folk mention that they get about 20 knots out of it (on similar sized boats). I'm not so sure I'm getting such a pace. More like 12-15 knots. Anyone know why? This is even running a light boat with one person aboard on a calm day. I may repost in the relevant section

Hi! I purchased what I thought was a 535 but turns out it's a 500. Mine was a commercial bass fishing boat in Wales until it was imported into Ireland about 3-years ago. Has 60hp Mariner on the back. Currently stripping it down for a complete refurb - including refitting windows. The cabin in mine has at some point been shortened - it's about 18" shorter than original. Hull is really heavy fiberslass - typical of the early days.
