Shetland 535

What would be the best outboard for a 535 for use on river and canal is a 5hp any good

Bit too small I would say. I have an aux 4.5 for when I am on the sea which I always test on the river at the start of each season. It works hard to push it along slowly and would struggle against a strong flow. I would probably go for a 10-15hp if it is definitely only going to be used on a river. Cheers David

I have a Shetland family four MK1 with an 8HP four stroke that takes me up & down the Thames to Brentford on less than 3/4 revs. I am due to go to Limehouse from the river wey this May, I bought the boat with a 25HP 2 stroke but on the river wey it was on such low revs it would not charge the battery so I had to rev up to get into charge then drop revs back to cruising speed.

I use a 10 hp 4 stroke on the river Trent, pushes me along fine. very rare that I've used it on full power.
