New member/need spec 535

Post by depoloso »

Hello all Shetland members,

my name it's Tomas from Lithuania, last week i have purchased this wonderful boat - Shetland 535 , made 1986. She has mounted 75 hp. mercury 2 stroke outboard also from the end of 90''s. Boat it's really great condition, looks like previous owner takes so much care. Boat has various lovely little things like toilet, small fridge..
In our country it's quite strictly requirements registering boat and for new registration it's not enough previous owner documents from Germany.. Boat also has 2 plates from manufacturer, but our inspection asking to provide boat certificate with the exact boat details as "boat design to use" it means it's category C or D.. How much persons it can carry, how much it's max load and what's boat draft.. Maybe someone has any details of the Shetland 535? Somewhere in the forum i'll found some specifications booklets, but it's not enough..
I also contacted Shetland company asking to provide any details, currently they have not responded.
If anyone has the plate with such details or any document, would be perfect to see...

We can't wait to use this boat for our planned trip , but until the registration it's not completed, she should stay at home :(

Hi,

I think what you are referring to is the Recreational Craft Directive classification. Here's a link to a guide on this:

http://www.europeanboatingindustry.eu/b ... ersion.pdf

From some other notes it appears the RCD only applies to boats built after 1998, so it is unlikely your boat will have been classified.

You will have to contact the relevant organisation in your country to determine if you need RCD compliance and certification

Hope this helps

Hi Tomas,

The serial number on the Shetland plate puts the year of build at around 1972, not 1986, by which time the 535 had long since been replaced by the 536 which in turn was replaced by the Family Four in the late 1970s. The year of build predates the UK membership of the EEC as was, never mind the establishment of the EC Recreational Craft Directive.
To make things more complicated, very few older British boats have any official or original documentation, because owning a boat here carries no more legal responsibilities than owning a bicycle.
You do have an excellent looking boat though!

Many thanks , guys , for response.

yes after research on shetlandowners forum , i realize that 535 has stopped production in 1976 and looks like our boat it's about 1972 . On the documents says that boat it's 1986 , so maybe it's first registration date... who knows.
After one weeks still not received any response from Shetland Boats, 2 times called them and get the answer that they received my mail and now they are busy and will respond sometime..
As i understand such details like Person's capacity, boat capacity etc. are provided
together with the CE certificate, so if the boat didn't have CE, such details shouldn't be asked...Should i try come back to this "boat registration" department and ask them to fill these details..
What document i should mention as a proof that all details are correct? I have found on this forum a lot of brochures with dimension specifications, but isn't there any brochure with more details?
i found "safe capacity" note, in that topic have been talked about Shetland 535..
Does somewhere can i find similar document where will be specified as it's from the Shetland 535 boat?

Hi Tomas,

Do not expect quick replies, if any, from Shetland boats. Their ownership has changed several times over the years, they do not have many records of very old boats, and are naturally more interested in new boat sales.
Most British boats for pleasure use do not get put on any kind of register, unless they are expected to leave UK waters, so the registration document from 1986 is most likely when it left the UK.
The capacity plate you have was not a legal requirement until the EU RCD replaced it, my 1987 F4 has no SBBNF capacity plate, and since it was attached to only some boats, maybe another member can provide photographic proof of one clearly attached to a 535?
Brochures from the 1970s did not carry much information about capacities such as loading, because there was no legal need to. It was left to the owner to consider what was safe, with no interference from any authorities until something went wrong.

Nice place to live UK .. Looks like it's a reason why our country 50% population it's already emigrated to UK :)
Today i already was in our local "boat registration" organisation... but same things asking.. Until i'll not specify boat specification from the manufacturer, they not registering my boat.
Also i've asked what they will do if i'll not get an answer from manufacturer? They saying in that case i must certificate our boat by CE requirements... There's about 30 companies in Europe and the nearest one it's in Poland , so then i should go to Poland and left the boat for 1 week for certificate test :)

Hi Tomas,

A retrospective CE inspection is a big deal for such an old boat, but yours is a very fine boat. Will your new CE rating apply to every 535 or just yours?

I will try to find the Shetland 535 brochure the SBNF recommendation refer to. A photo copy may help you.

I hope that CE tests will not be needed in this case.. I found company in my country which works with Poland company and inspectors from Poland may come to Lithuania and make tests. Because there's companies which imports water scooters from United States and all craft from US require CE certificate, so they must to do tests.
They also specified that if we will come to Poland with our boat and they test it with all requirements it may sink.. :D. However if they test it here, in Lithuania, it may cost about 1100eur and exercises will not be so "heavy" than directly in their test center... :)
Indead we just need official answer from the Shetland company, if they specify all required details, there's not any problems to continue boat registration.

Thank you vreagh, any attached details will be really appreciated. Also it may help for other Shetland owners.

Did i understand correctly, that for the pleasure boats did not need any documents and registrations in UK ??

Hi, and yes, boats under a certain tonnage don't require registration in U.K. here's the pages. They refer to the Shetland 69, which as can seen, is the early name for the 535 when it was introduced
