Buying a Shetland 4+2 our first river boat

Hi

We are looking at buying a Shetland 4+2. It has a 25hp Honda outboard and the boat looks clean and tidy - age not certain. Any advice as to what we should look out for when checking the boat over?

Look at it when it is raining heavily, that way you can see if any of the windows or hatches leak. Run the engine of course.

thanks its is raining heavily now and we are going to see it tomorrow I note they have a cover over the Houdini hatch

Look for damp patches in the headlining, I had to remove the pulpit and grab rail and re seal as they all leaked
Yup and check hatch as before,

Why does it appear to be so difficult to tell age a boat was built - I note many sites state the age of a boat is uncertain? Maybe 1999 for example.


With Shetland's are the design features with help with establishing the age?

Hi all my 4 +2 has a year cast in the grp on the consul but its part covered,some have the same thing on the transom & check in the right hand gas locker/step in the cockpit sometimes there is a safety rating plate in there which could also give a date of issue
