Advice on re-re-repaint

Hi all and hope you’re all well.
With the virus and all that I’ve decided to re paint my 535. It was painted white just before I bought it and the job was rubbish so I’ve jet washed all the flakey stuff off and done a fair bit of scrapping. Underneath the white is 2 more layers of blue and light blue which are going no where without heavy sanding with like 80 grit paper on a random orbital sander.
Was after advice about the best way to approach this? The Gelcoat (light green) I’ve got to in a couple of places where the scraper got under a bit of the original paint job but in general that original paint is a good base.Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks,Mark

Hi Mark.
I painted one if my old 535's with international toplac paint and undercoat with a radiator paint roller.
It shines like gel and looked good most people wouldn't notice it was painted.

It's not cheap paint but it does look good and I sold my one 3 years later and it can was still fine.

I wish the guy had left this as it was who I had it off. Would you recommend just painting over the solid paint then after I’ve removed all of the flakey white stuff? I have undercoat and topcoat from Teamac. Thanks,Mark

As long as it's well stuck and flat.
I would probably paint straight over it.

My current 535 hull is the mustard or poorly dog poo colour gelcoat.
I was told at one time they were all made that colour then painted in the factory if you wanted a different colour hull, so your may have been painted from new.

Hi I bought a 535 which had been badly painted .The w
ay I approached it was to rub the hull with 320 wet and
dry with lots of water by hand with a block as for tougher
Places use 80 to get most of paint of ,but do not rub in
To the gel coat Fill any imperfections with a good marine
Filler rub down with 320 paper Finish of the whole hill
With 400 paper and wash off the whole hull I used
White spirit to clean off then I then applied two coats of
Toplac undercoats then rubbed it all down lightly with400
Washed and cleaned of with white spirit then applied one
Coat of toplac rubbed down as undercoat then applied
Final coat using foam roller which I changed quite frequently as it will start to dissolve after a while I started on the transom to get the feel of the paint I rubbed mine down by hand I found sander messy
The finish is all about preparation my finish was
Excellent far better than I expected
Toplac is a good paint ,but not recommended for long

Thanks for your input Les.
I’ve got a fair way with sanding but to remove some of the final bits of stubborn white paint I’ve bought some Owatrol marine strip which will do the job I hope. If this removes the other layers underneath the white down to the gel coat I may well do it all with this then see where I’m at from there.
I have all the filler etc I need to patch up the body and am looking forward to the project,I’m in no rush as I can’t go out on it at the minute with the virus and all that so just plodding along at the weekends as I still have to work. Thanks,mark
