I’m selling my Shetland 69 boat, with a Mariner 40hp engine and on a trailer.
I bought this recently, and hoped that lockdown would give me the chance to put some time in on her. The reality of having two small children, and having to store the boat some distance away, has meant this hasn’t worked out, and I’ve come to the decision that it’s best just to move her on rather than let her deteriorate on a trailer in a storage yard.
I want to the kind of seller that I’d want to buy from, so I’ll be as honest as I can be about everything, so you know where you stand.
The first thing to say is that, as far as I’m concerned, she’s ready to use and go into the water. I believe the previous owner used her frequently (sadly he died, and I bought it from people who were selling it on behalf of his widow). However, I’ve never had her in the water, and so I have no choice but to list as Spares or Repair, even though I don’t think she is.
The hull has been recently re-painted and seems in good order. The transom has been replaced and seems very solid (though the mounting holes through to bolt the engine to it should have been glassed on the inside and haven’t been, though still seem fine). Controls all work fine. Interior is set up for fishing. A couple of deck boards would stand replacing, and have gone a bit soft. I have no reason to believe the stringers underneath aren’t solid (though haven’t investigated them all, but the ones I’ve seen are fine). The windscreen needs replacing. I haven’t tested the nav lights or 12v electrics, though have got a battery I will include.
The engine seems in really good order. I saw it running and made sure it idled well for 10 min or so, and it did so fine. It’s been looked after, and is clean and tidy underneath the shell. I can’t show you it running where it is, because there’s no water to connect to the mufflers. You can, though, see that it turns over fine, and that there’s compression. It has electric start (obviously, for a 40hp!). Tank included.
The trailer is the thing I’m a little suspicious of. It’s unbraked (there are brakes ,but they’re not connected) and I think that’s probably a bit dodgy - certainly with the weight of the engine as well (for just the hull, it’s probably ok, but I haven’t weighed it - that’s something you’d need to make your mind up about). If it was me, I’d move the engine in the back of the car, and tow the boat. I towed it about 10 miles from where it was to where it is now, and it was fine. Bearings were fine, etc. The spare wheel has a flat, just so you know, and someone’s painted the trailer quite recently, which always makes me suspicious, but it did, in fairness, tow fine.
I paid £1600. I’m asking £1500, and think that’s fair, so won’t accept offers - not least because basically, I’m just looking to make my money back. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but just isn’t something I can make full use of at the mo...
