Fire extinguisher.

Hi,
Does any one know what type of fire extinguisher should be used for cooker?
Powder or water? For boat cert.

Differing lines of thought on this one, in basic terms you should only use water on solid fuel fires, like a bonfire, foam on oil fires & powder/ inert gas on electrical appliances. Powder will also do oil. Most small boats will probably have a fire blanket for cooking area incidents & a powder for any other, & they should be in open view & at hand, so not in a locker & not right up forward in the cabin so you can't get to it. I must admit I'm not sure if there are specific regs pending boat size for the safety cert, if you go on their web-site they will probably give some guidance on this topic. At the end of the day you don't want to be squirting water everywhere, you don't want horrible powder on all your furnishings and you don't want to be inhaling an oxygen starving gas,so be vigilant.

Yes I thought I'd get lots of answer's on this one.
I don't think nobody knows, including me! What do they have fixed in there? Think I'll try and call the boat examiner up and ask what is correct extinguisher? It doesn't say on the safety advice, Just what they are.

Like you say, I will be putting a 2kg just inside door cabin, and fire blanket. Another 2kg one outside by the helm. I only have a 1 cannister burner, and don't keep spare cannister's. Hopefully that will suffice.

I would suggest powder (along with a fire blanket) as they can be used on nearly all types of fire. We have one in the cabin and one in the cockpit of our Blackhawk, and this has been OK for the BSS certificate. Just remember to check the expiry dates and pressure gauge.

I've just ordered 2 x 2kg powder extinguisher's with fire blanket, only to now be told that I cant have my camping gaz double burner with grill!
No portable gas stoves are allowed. Only a purpose built gas cooker, must be installed by a boat gas company.
This is all red tape to me!

Assume no portable gas stoves is because they are not fixed. Have you bolted it down?
Also on the subject of extinguishers, I had two that had gone past their use by date. They were Wickes ones so I took them with me to see if they still had the same size. Asked at reception and they said yes, hang on. Came back and gave me replacements without charge. Free exchange!! I was amazed, didn’t ask fir that and the cockpit one was really faded. Guess what I always buy now!

Are spirit burners allowed for the BSS? The Dometic Origo range, although now discontinued are really popular on yachts, and can still be found 2nd hand on eBay. Other brands are still made. Just avoid Taylors unless you have well over a grand to spend...

dare I say, when a car gets MOT'd the garage can only pass/fail on what is fitted, so if you had a bald spare tyre in the boot you failed, if it was in your garage it couldn't be tested so you passed, so the moral of the story is leave the cooker at home along with any food, you never know
