Hi all. I’ve been doing some maintenance work on my 4+2. I’d like to sort out the cabling through the transom. There are corner fenders and the port one overlaps the cable gland. The fuel line comes through its own hole.
My idea is to re glass the hole and make a small one for the steering cable. The throttle and electrics would move towards the centre.
For the fuel line I’m thinking an electric cable gland would be better than nothing like I have at the moment. I would have it higher as it’s close to the waterline.
Or should I just move the cable gland over a bit to clear the fender? Putting another hole in the transom might not not improve things!
I’ve replace the cockpit drains and have a bit of a saga with replacing the engine mounting timber with the engine in place!

Making progress slowly. Managed to use straps to support the engine whilst I replaced the timber. Nifty idea from my other half worked very well. Today I did my first bit of fibreglassing. I decided to fill the old hole and start again. Found some ply (the type used as site shuttering) which I cut to fit. I the wet the edges with resin and glasses in 3 layers so far. Advice is not to do more due to heat build up. I got colour coded resin which looks a pretty close match. I’ll add more tomorrow if it’s not raining. The ply was a few mm thinner so there’s more to fill on the inside but I may not fill it flush, it’s a strong repair as it is. Helm and cable have arrived and I’ve got engine spares so hope to crack on. The cooling needs a good flush to clear the shells and gunk I found in it (previous owner). Looking into best product.

Good work Clive. Must have been a squeaky bum moment taking those engine bolts out!
How come your batching platform frame is so shiny? Did you have to clean it up? Maybe its because mine spends all of its time in salt water.
Are you replacing the timber planks? What with?
I didn’t get much time to do maintenance before she went back on the water due to lock down, so I’ve got a long list for next winter! The hydraulic helm system worked well and she’s much easier to steer now.

It was! Delayed the project worrying about it but it never did anything unpredictable thank goodness. Re-aligning the holes for the engine was the worst but it the crowbar worked when I slacked off the straps.
The bathing platform is how it came. I keep it clean but it’s just shiny! Always looks better in pics. The timber planks have come up stunning. Had to plane/sand and reseal. I used Osmo which is a fave product of mine. It’s an absorbing bees wax but without a skin like varnish so you can touch up any damage. Plus it’s food safe and red wine safe (always an issue on a swim platform
). It 100% seals the wood - liquid makes droplets on it.
Still working on where to put the new hole for cables. Steering can’t change but they were a mess before, all over the planks.

Colour match not the best... spoke to East Coast Fibreglass who say matching old boat GRP is all but impossible. I recon the resin was a better match so I’m trying with that, thickened with cabosil which is white and may lighten it. Top tip for mixing was to mix and leave overnight - same principle as wallpaper paste. Going to grind back and reapply the cable hole, other bits will be hidden, otherwise very happy with the repair.

Looking good clive, time to get it polished off and launched before you miss too much season
I have now sold my 1989 F4 mk4, 2015 70hp 4str Yamaha. Milford Haven. I proudly owned it for over 20 years, before changing to sailpower and a yacht...

Yes indeed. I finished flushing the engine yesterday - got a lot of shells and sand out so fingers crossed the tell tale will stay clear. Having seen a lot on YouTube I used white vinegar with good enough results. Neat to soak overnight then about 60/40 water vinegar to flush. Bought a bilge pump and put a hose into the thermostat housing. Found some pipe to connect to telltale so I could recirculate then ran it for maybe three hours - till the crud stopped. I then removed the tape and put the hose through open thermostat channel so the exhaust run got flushed. After that flushed with water for half an hour in each channel.
Impeller check next. Gearbox oil was tiny bit milky, just the first teaspoon so hoping that’s the lack of washer and standing for over a year. Plugs and oil filter fine, only done 15 hours or so. Looking at fitting prop guard to replace broken skeg. Got to drill new holes for cables and replace fuel line and I’m good to go! Weathers so rubbish I’m not missing much on the water!

Really pleased with myself! Having never worked on an outboard I started her up today for the first time since Sept 2019. Fired up first time. Perfect flow from the telltale (on a flexible tube so it doesn’t go everywhere).
New impeller, thermostat and oils. Plus of course the new skeg. Will look at painting the rest now I know it works! Next some trials to see if I need to fit the prop guard as not sure about it.
Happy days.
