Shetland 570 Outboard size & Double bottom

Hi,
New to the forum and recently bought a 570 with a little work required. I require to re-engine and may have the opportunity of getting a 90Hp Tohatsu tldi is this size ok for a 570 and has anyone had experience of tohatsu's?

Secondly i found 3 x 1" plugs in the floor and i popped them out and found expanding foam, are the double bottoms foamed from new or has this been done since. I have seen this before and it absorbs water and adds weight again any thoughts comments experiences shared would be great.

I tried to add some pictures but cant seem to do it!!

90hp does seem to be the most popular size engine for the 570 and unless you intend to only use it on rivers, it will be ideal for sea / estuary use. I have seen them with up to 115hp but think that would be the limit.

I believe the foam filled floors were standard from the factory but not 100% sure on this.

I had a 15hp Tohatsu which was brilliant. Very reliable, quiet and hardly used fuel. I know it’s a lot different to a 90 but I’d get one. Less expensive without compromising build quality. Cheers.

I read somewhere around 2015 that the larger tohatsu models were to be built for them by Honda, and based on Honda designs. In effect, a cheap Honda outboard in black.

That’s what I was told when I had mine fitted (on my previous boat). It was an excellent choice!

Thanks for the comments, I doubt a 15Hp is not suitable for us as we will be using her in the sea so need to be able to get on the plane and cover some distance now and then

Agree, 15hp not enough for your needs - I meant I’d get a 90hp Tohatsu!
