Replacement steering wheel

Hello all, I have just purchased my first boat, it's an old Shetland 535 that needs a fair bit of love care and restoration which I'm hoping to be able to sort myself. One of the first things that I noted, that I need to sort out, was a new steering wheel. Someone had apparently pinched the previous one and it now has a temporary crude tiller placed on the outboard for steering.

My question is fairly simple, do I need a specific wheel or are they pretty universal ?

Any help will be greatly appreciated and apologies if my ignorance of boating and or boating terminology at this stage is not quite up to speed.

When I bought my Shetland (new) it was supplied with wire rope steering and a cheap pulley and steering wheel. I would have thought that after 50 years most boats would have had a change of system. If you're just changing the wheel, make sure it will fit the size and taper (if any) of the shaft.

Thank you for that, I'm hoping it is just replacing the steering wheel, I'll know a little more shortly as I'm starting today to restore, clean and prepare things today. Cheers
