information and advice on the Caledonian Canal

My other half has finally got his way and we are now planning our trip down the Caledonian Canal for sometime around April next year, my elderly Mum will be joining us (90th birthday year fortunately a very active lady so we hope at the end of the trip she will be thanking us !!!!) so we have a few things we need to put in place, Mum lives on the Black Isle near Inverness so we will be starting our trip from Inverness, we need to locate B and B / hotels / guest houses along the route for my Mum to stay in, any local knowledge on this area would be much appreciated. We have a detailed map of the route and will be tackling sensible chunks of cruising each day, having allowed over 14 days for the return journey. Particularly interested to hear from anyone who has done this trip and also anyone from around Avoch on the Black Isle as we do fancy doing a bit of cruising around the area having canoed in an open along the coastal area of the Black Isle . Hi Dave, as we are taking my elderly Mum (with probably other family members and friends joining us at various stages of the trip) and not sure what pace we will be travelling at, its probably not the best time to join us for the whole trip. Happy to meet up for a day or so or part of it if all goes to plan, alternatively depending on time available we may also try and launch around Avoch (my Mums village), and explore a bit of the Moray Firth which may be another option to meet up. I'll stay in touch and let you know how the plans are going, at the moment we are probably looking at starting off leaving home in Mid Wales at around the beginning of April, working on the basis that depending on whether the boat at the time is at home or on the 'Lakes' towing will take us 1 to 1 1/2 days. Martin intends to do some detailed planning over the next couple of months or so and obviously we are still looking for any B and B / hotels information along the route. Best regards, Dee

I’m MORE THAN - now where did I get that from - tempted to join others for a Caledonian Canal “Cruise In Company”, nearly did it last year (launching from Corpach or the Great Glen Water Park) but chickened out ’cos basically only me and the missus.

April’s good for me, c’mon guys, let’s DO IT!

we are in. we have had a few meets this year on loch fyne and loch lomond and had a great time.
