yes at it will with a 50 but that will be at full revs and you not be able to throttle it back, hence why a 60 would be so much better. the 50 would be like driving down the motorway in 4th gear at 90 mph

I think the weight of a big four stroke is more of a concern than the power on a 20year old transom. The mk 5 F4 was rated at 90hp but that would have been a two stroke and a lot lighter than an equivalent four stroke, and with a lot more acceleration and pickup power. Have you considered the new generation of two strokes like the evinrude e-tec or the tohatsu engines? Lightweight, powerful, quiet, clean and economical to run, but hard to find on the used market. When I replace my johnson two stroke at ten years old next year i will most likely go for a tohatsu direct injection two stroke 70hp for my mk 4 F4.

Hi,

I have a 2003 Mariner 2 stroke 90hp on a shetland 536 family four mk1.
Love it, plenty of power. been on the boat since new, no issues. I did put wings on the the engine to help lift the transom out of the water due to weight.

I just dont blitz it all the time, but on calm days i like to open it up and see what i can get out of her, - about 32 knots with 3 adults
