Firstly, have her surveyed by an independant QUALIFIED surveyor.

Our 27 (with 56hp inboard Yanmar) was delivered brand new in February this year and I had conflicting reports about the build quality. (there is a chap out there who has had a fall-out with Shetland and does seem to revel in slating them) Most were very positive but a couple were not so. After a little research I found that the negatives were unjustified. It seemed to me that some folk wanted the quality of a Bentley for the price of a Fiesta, it ain't going to happen !

Ours has now completed 18 hours with no problems to write home about. She steers smoothly. Turns on a sixpence up on the Yorkshire Ouse, has the advantage of both bow and stern thrusters which make mooring in tight spots, in York marina, a doddle. The engine runs smoothly and BLOOMIN' ECONOMICALLY !( Approx 1 ltr per hour @ 1400-1500 rpm. )
No it's not a Broom but then again I'm not marine mortgaged up to the wotsits either. She's a very good, bang for bucks boat.
I've added a pair of fairleads up front as it makes for our type of mooring a little easier.
More to the point is that my wife really likes the boat, which in turn makes my life a whole lot easier !! :D

Hope this helps to make your desicision easier.

Hi, Just to second Polski's comments, we had our new Shetland 27 delivered in March this year on the lower Thames. Nearly 30 hours on the clock and no issues so far. We are both really pleased with it.
I too after researching found some very negative comments which did concern me but then I found that the Chairman of the RYA Thames Valley and London region owns a 27 on the Thames and is very please with his and was kind enough to reassure any concerns I had.
Most of the newer 27's seem to come fully loaded with goodies, not much else too add although I did have fairleads fitted, Epoxy on the hull, upgraded to diesel heating and had a disc rope cutter fitted.

Ours has a 54hp Yanmar which seems to have plenty of power (well, when compared to our old 4+2 with a 15hp outboard!) only a bow thruster only but its still fairly manoeuvrable. If you can find one with a bow and stern thruster, that would be simple to move around.

You really cant go wrong with a shetland 27, as it has about everything you would want in a boat. How I view them is "they are like floating caravans" as downstairs you have as much "if not more" as a good quality caravan. Mine is a diesel 40hp Yanma and is so cheap to run. "I am sure the engine is running on fresh-air" lol :D
Mine is 9 months old, shetland 27i, and although I say I love it "which I do" I am having problems in jumping in and out when mooring, due to a car crash I had and abdominal injury. If I moor up stern on, I have no problems as I just get in and out via the transom door and onto the swim platform. when the canopy is down, no problem, but when its up that when I have the problem. "being 6ft does not help also" :(
So now I have put her on the market for sale, and am now looking for a replacement that has just as much as the shetland 27i, but with a walkway all around the boat, and wider beam. I will be sorry to see her go, "but needs must" as they say.

I would make one reccommendation to do, when you purchase a shetland, and thats to change all the halogen bulbs over to LEDs. Its ok if your on shore power hook-up, but if you are using the batterys the halogen bulb draw to much power. "plus they get very hot" and have been burnt when turning the spotlights on. Be careful where you buy your LED bulbs from, as some places can charge to much for them. ie: a marine shop will sting you around £9 a bulb. I got mine from Amazon and they worked out around £1.50 each. "big saving"

Anyway, good luck in buying your shetland, and I am sure you will make the right choice. People I have spoken to who own shetlands say they would not have any other boat. So that must tell you something. All the Best

Thanks for all your helpfully advice our price range is 30-40K max and on the Thames as the cost of transport must be taken into account 3000kg is a big boat to be towed by my reliant robin .
