Blistering on the hull below the water line

Hi all
We have found a Shetland 27 that we can afford but as always there is a catch, at the last survey 2010 the main concern is blistering on the hull no visible gel coat damage 60% of the hull was covered with small lumps 1mm high and 3 mm in diameter some with traces of moisture. No remedial action taken. Is it worth going ahead with a full survey or walking away? Nice ride and It steers well

Sounds like osmosis to me if a survey confirms this to be the case then best to walk away.osmosis can be rectified only by removal of the old gelcoat and refinishing with new, professional job though and mega bucks !!

I totally agree, it's a lot of hard work to get rid of Osmosis, and you may find you will for a few years get blistering in other parts of the hull that have not been treated. WALK AWAY. Sorry

The Shetland 27 is a great boat; I finished restoring a 535 this rekindled my love of boating ( photo on this site moneypenny ) no blistering on this boat . Has the quality of Shetland changed over the years . Thanks for all the help and advice

The 535 and the Shetland 27 are 2 different animals in so much as the 535 would almost certainly have been kept on a trailer. The 27 however would have been in the water 24/7 365 days of the year on a mooring somewhere. so far from Shetland quality going downhill,i think the quality if anything has got significantly better especially on newer models . in any event osmosis is a nightmare and very difficult to erradicate completely so why worry about 1 boat when there are so many out there on the market .

Hi, what is your budget? I have a really nice shetland 27i for sale, which is only 9 months old. It is fully loaded and has many extras as it is 27i. "I have even changed all the lights from halogen to LEDs" You can view the photos under FOR SALE, and I have reduced the price now, due to the fact that I have found another craft I would like to purchase. I have not advertised the new price on here as yet, but I am sure I could do you a good deal on the price, "and very much doubt you would be able to purchase a 9 month old 27i for the same price" Have a think, and contact me if interested.

The Shetland 27 survey was on a 2001 boat surveyed in 2010 blisting has not sunk any boat that I am aware of Further detail are available on the Viking website .The Shetland 27 is a great boat the one we inspected , must have been a preproduction model . Later versions have had the faults corrected, provided the boat is maintained she will provide years of faithful service .We have found a Freeman 27 with full service history 1000 running hrs in pristine condition. An older boat but much cheaper She was subject of a report in the motorboat monthly 1998 and still virtually in the same condition. We made an offer which was accepted subject to survey.
