Family 4 V 535

Hi There wonder can any one help.
I am thinking of buying a boat either a family 4 or a 535
My Question is if i have a 75HP on a family 4 and a 75HP on a 535
pulling a ring which one would consume the most petrol?
And would there be a significant difference ??

Hi Rory, Im not an expert but i will try. Firstly the 535 is only rated up to a 60hp engine although i do know people who have bigger on them. If you run the 75hp at full throttle on the 535 and full throttle on the family 4 i would imagine fuel consumption would be the same but it would be the speed that would be diffrent. A 75hp on a 535 (which your not supposed to use) will fly like a rocket and would be on the plane no problem. As for the family 4 i would imagine again it would get up on the plane reasonably easy but you will need to wait until a family 4 owner comes on. If you are going to be going fast the most fuel efficient way to do it is get the boat up on the plane and then throttle back enough to keep it just on the plane. Although that might not work pulling a ring.

Hi,

An F4 with a 75hp is about optimum, but they are plated as suitable for engines up to 90hp. It is a heavier boat than the 535, but the hull profile is different, the 535 is a deep V entry to a fairly flat stern, the F4 is a medium V gull wing.
The difference in fuel consumption will probably be quite small, in favour of the lighter 535, but the F4 with an engine within the plated rating will be insurable, and they tend to have more creature comforts as well as the (unsinkable?) foam filled floor.
If you are concerned about fuel economy, get either a 4stroke or a later generation 2stroke that complies with EPA2006, but an old 2stroke 75hp will drink well over 1litre per mile pulling a donut and about 1lpm when cruising. Add to that the cost of 2stroke oil at 20ml per litre of petrol...

Thanks for all your replies i find this very interesting.
As my 3 boys wont me to by a boat that i can pull them around with a ring for a few hours in the summer time each day
But i still wont something to fish and maybe camp on for a week or to in the summer.
so my next question is what is the difference in consummation between a 4 stroke 75-hp and a 2 stroke 75-hp engines
As to what you are saying is that a 2 stroke 75-hp would rob me so would a 4 stroke 75-hp be much better but by how much.

Hi Rory,

I had a 75 on my F4 and later bought a new Mariner 60 Big Foot. I found no difference in speed but the fuel consumption is lower.
I get on the plane at about 13-14 knots. The noise level was also less although the 75 was older which may account for that.

The 75Hp 4 stroke will use about 2/3rds of the fuel compared to the 2 stroke but....

1: it is a lot heavier
2: acceleration is far slower
3: has far more torque so when it is up to speed it will pull the rings far better
4: 4 strokes cost a lot more to buy and to service

So based on the above I would go 2 stroke, pay a lot less, get a good service or do it yourself and go for the F4 or 570/blackhawk as these are the best boats for your other requirements.

Either way you will have great fun and as long as you look after the boat it will not lose daft money like cars do!
