Engine size

I have a shetland 498 and it states maximum engine size 50 hp. I have noticed that a lot of people have 60 and 70hp engines on the same boat, is this safe?

Hi alanvs

There are two things that you need to consider:

1. Whether the boat, and transom in particular, can actually take the extra weight and power of the 70 hp engine. You could call Shetland Boats and ask James whether it will or not, preferably getting it in writing for the next point.

2. Whether or not it will invalidate your insurance. Most companies will only cover up to what the manufacturers' recommended engine size is - if a bigger engine is fitted, it may invalidate the insurance for the whole boat in the event of an accident. You need to talk to your company and ask them if a 70 hp would still be covered. If you had it in writing from Shetland Boats that it was OK as far as the boat itself was concerned, then you might be able to convince the insurance company. If they do accept it, get that in writing also.

as above and that size boat does not need anything of that size so why bother. I know 40-50hp engines are hard to get but that is still no excuse for putting a bigger engine on as the risk is simply not worth it along with bigger bills!

i have a shetland 500 which is basically the same boat as the 498. I have a 70 hp outboard on the back with no problems and mine is rated to max 50 hp. If you look at the boat specs on this website and click on the 498 it states its rated to max 70hp, not sure if this info is correct or not.

just make sure your insurance company knows as many will refuse to pay out or even insure you wen the Outboard is that much over powered.
