Right, I'm still concentrating on getting the painting of the topsides finished. Three coats of Combi Color have gone on now but the finish was beyond orange peel in places. More like goose flesh! This is odd because I painted my van by the same method and only got some slight orange peel. Things like the temperature and how much you thin the paint have a pronounced effect on the finish.
So, I resigned myself to a lot of flatting and polishing.... My biggest mistake was buying my fine grade wet and dry from Halfords. Less than 2 minutes with the orbital sander (surface well wetted) were enough to shred the "waterproof" paper each time and I had to abort the job. However, I had done enoughto prove p1500 paper is effective at removing orange peel and I have now bought some top quality stuff by Starck for this weekend's assault..

I've now gone over the whole boat with p1500 wet and dry in the orbital palm sander and I've discovered a) this will remove the orange peel surface but it takes an awful lot of time and b) the high-quality Starck paper lasts longer than the Halfords stuff but still gets shredded in 10 mins or so.
Anyway, I have now covered all the large surfaces and have reduced the orange peel to what I hope will be acceptable after polishing.
I have also made a start on painting the hull. I am hoping to get a decent finish with a metallic silver but everyone tells me thats impossible with a roller. I've painted the transom using the rolling and tipping method (paint with the roller then lightly trail the tip of a brush across the surface. See what you think...

While I'm away from the boat mid week I'm getting on with some peripheral work:

The latter two because I don't want to pay Shetland's prices for bits of plastic. I can do better in wood.
My boat already has what seems to be a home made roof hatch and I've decided to paint this blue to match the boat. I'm also fitting an opening porthole in the hatch for light and ventilation. Picture below - apologies if its upside down...

The 210mm hole is for a Seaflo porthole, ordered from eBay. I unwisely cut the hole based on the dimensions given on the listing but they were incorrect!
Luckily; they also do a larger porthole which will save the day. The smaller one will now be fitted in my cabin door.
Strangely, Seaflo have been reluctant to change the listing info, despite the fact that it is plainly wrong!

Phones know which way is up from when you took the photo that's why, you can rotate them in a editing package on your PC (eg paint.net is a free one) or using the Android photo's app, not sure about Apple phones though. I bought some new portholes for my 570, as the old one had a VHF aerial poking through it, and the other side is cracked and a PO has just liberally applied silicone everywhere. Trouble is I'm a bit torn between keeping the boat original or now, the new portholes being a little bit bigger meaning there is no going back if I fit them.

Thanks. I've figured out how to rotate them on the phone now so future pics may well be the right way up!

The cabin door is now finished with yacht varnish and fitted. It has a 3mm foam seal attached to the door which mates with a 5mm P-seal whichsis stuck to the door frame.
stainless hinges and door lock from Jay Wolfe via eBay finish the job off nicely I think.

Really impressed by the descriptions and the results, I'm partway through refurbished of a 610, and have similar learning curves.
