Hi Folks
I advertised my boat yesterday as we seemed to have our first glimpse of Summer.

There were two immediate reply's asking if the boat was still for sale. I simply replied it was and suggested a viewing.

This is what I got and the second was similar (using the "I'm on an oil rig story") but also asked for Paypal information.

Either I am turning down genuine sales or they are scams. I suggest the latter. Please be warned and don't get caught yourself as the money will never clear your account.


Thanks for the mail,i am buying this for my daughter as his gift because i would not be around to celebrate with her i am a petroleum engineer currently on a rig offshore and due to the nature of my work,phone calls making and visiting of website are restricted but i squeezed out time to check this advert and send you an email regarding it. I really want this item to be a surprise gift for my daughter so i wont let her know anything about the item until it gets delivered to her,i am sure she will be more than happy with the item.I will make the payment through paypal because i don't have access to my bank account online as i don't have internet banking, but i can pay from my PayPal account,as i have my bank a/c attached to it, i will need you to give me your PayPal email address so i can make the payment as soon as possible for the item and pls if you don't have PayPal account yet,it is very easy to set up, go on www.paypal.com and get it set up ,after you have set it up i will only need the e-mail address you used for registration with PayPal so as to put the money through.I have a pick up agent that will come for the pick up immediately you have receive the payment in full.please get back to me with your final price.

I hate scammers, but am not sure how giving your paypal address would lead to you getting scammed. At the end of the day it's usually just your email address. I do agree this doesn't sound genuine, but stranger things have happened and as long as you get cleared funds into your bank account who are we to argue? Yes, do be careful, and never release a boat, or anything for that matter, without CLEARED funds in your bank.

It's a scam all oil rigs have internet most have wifi. If he can't get on the internet how is he going to do the paypal transaction. Offshore working is 2 on 2 off so plenty of time for looking at boats. My friend had the exact same email when he sold his VW van

Final tally....One sea trip for a guy who had never been on a boat before or so it seemed...... One couple who strung us along for four hours and numerous cups of tea, agreed on a price and then hadn't a bean on them for a deposit and disappeared after promising to get back to me in a couple of days..... Six oil rig type e-mails which of course are the desperate sad people wanting to scam you.
And then a Father Son and Brother combination who knew exactly what they wanted, paid cash and left happily with the boat in tow for the West Country.

Job done.

if you use paypal, the customer can take their money back, but they only have so many days to do it. it might be 14 days i think. (im sure a quick google search will tell all)

so you give or send the goods, then the next day, they can take their money back.

Hi there sniffy Terrence, not sure what your background is in relation to oil rigs but I have been working on rigs all over the world for the last 20 years and yet while they all have internet you cant always get access to them, some of the secure sites will not be accessible, phone calls are virtually impossible in some parts of the world, and there are only a few places that work 2 x 2, the best advice I can give anyone on having this sort of contact, having been there myself is to ask exactly the rig name, location & company they are working for, don't ask for anything else as most of it will be confidential, so basically if you do get a message from someone on a rig don't always assume its a scam, also remember that for a lot of the service personnel out offshore they have many hours surfing the net (if they have it) looking for their next toy to buy when they get home.
