Hi Dave,

Welcome to the forum from another Dave. I have owned my 535 for four years and like you I knew next to nothing about boats until then. I have learned a huge amount in the last four years, including how frustrating and expensive even 'cheap' boat ownership can be!!! In general though most things are fixable with a sensible question on the forum and a few YouTube videos. Good luck and enjoy - the boat should fly with a 70hp 2 stroke, but worth remembering the maximum rating for a 535 was 65hp (I think) so go carefully. Regards David

Don't think you should have any problems with the 70hp. I've had a 2-stroke 70hp Johnson on the back of my 535 for years, and never had an issue. Gets a good thrashing at full throttle on the sea for a couple of weeks a year, and spends time on the inland waterways the rest of the year.

Although should perhaps add that the engine is bolted through a thick piece of marine ply underneath the splashwell, so I guess this adds to the transom strength. But like I said, with this setup, never had an issue with the engine being overpowered.

The 70 is more than enough. the dream engine is the honda 50hp and that should give 28 knots !
