Apologies in advance for new owner naivety. I just bought an old 535 for gentle Broads cruising. A couple of questions:
1. I'm thinking of buying a custom made or proprietary (if they exist) tonneau cover to protect open aft well when vessel not in use. Are such things available?
2. What size fenders will I need and how many?
3. Any tips on giving her top sides a paint job (she has been painted before and is peeling a bit.
4. ........ How soon will experienced owners get fed up with my daft questions?

Hi there, you can get a canopy easy enough if that's what your after. There are quite a few places that supply them.

for fenders it all depends on who you will hit or will hit you. Most booats on loch lomond dont ahve them but as we rescue so many idiots ( not shetland users as they seem to have common sense or ask) we have 3 on each side. as for jetties and banks you will not do any real damage unless you are going far to fast so it is also a personal choice but as I said for us 6 and they cost around £15.00 each or less at your local boat jumble ( google this to find your local one)

re painting: this is a big subject so should be a separate post please or if you want a quick answer you will see calum has posted from Lomond marine in the general section and you could send him a pm or even better call him 07789 756636 and say that dave from clyde outboards told you to call!

Hello and welcome. I have some addresses that will make you a cover at very reasonable cost. I am away from home at the moment so give me a few days. As Dave says be careful before you paint anything. Plenty of advice on here as for fenders, you can never gave enough. Especially on the broads. Thanks Sue, will await addresses in due course. There seems to be more to this painting business than meets the eye - clearly won't be a case of slapping a brush about on a lazy Sunday afternoon! Can you point me towards any specific guidance?

What exactly is it you want to paint? The gelcoat? And Why?

The minute you paint the original gel coat, the value of the boat is affected and the wrong paint will do untold damage

The boat's sound but pretty old and a bit tatty. She's already been painted top sides as evidenced by the fact that she's original pale blue inside the cockpit and red outside (peeling in a few places). I'm not over bothered by value but would like to smarten her up a bit.
I'm based down in Suffolk's beautiful Waveney valley and will keep the boat in the Beccles area near where I live.

Regarding painting the topside I would suggest in looking here http://www.smlmarinepaints.co.uk/

Jotun make superb paint and I would suggest the 2-pack would make the best job and last.

This site also provides very useful info http://www.smlmarinepaints.co.uk/paint_info but like most things to get a good finish it all comes down to preperation before any paint is applied.

Also thought are you going to leave the boat in the water at its mooring or on a trailer?
