Shetland 27 Outboard: Stern on Mooring

Has anyone got experience of stern on moorings in a 27 o/b? I am thinking of moving mine to the Broads where there are lots of stern on moorings. The outboard projects beyond the bathing platform and needs to be protected from hitting the dock. Further I need a way of getting a man ashore with a line to moor up. Someone out there must have an answer to this issue.

Best way to protect an OB is with a plastic bucket. When you say stern to moorings, are you talking about piles, pontoons or against a wall?

Hi TimD1, I have done stern on mooring on the Broads but with a inboard, and the way we did it was to line up with your mooring and start to go astern, about 3/ 4 ft before you get to the bank you need to have a member of crew up front and drop a mud anchor and tie it off on your front bollard. Then get the crew member to the aft of the boat ready to tie off at your mooring, tieing off one wrap from your port aft cleat and another from your starboard aft cleat. Both got to shore bollards port & Starboard. The boat should now be secure. we never had a problem doing it like this even in windy conditions.

Thanks for these replies. Most stern to moorings on the broads are against a wall I guess. It is slightly more tricky with an outboard than an inboard in that the o/b on a 27 is mounted on the bathing platform and projects well beyond the stern of the boat, ie if unprotected it is the first thing to hit the dock and the crew member will have to take a big step to get onto the dock therefore.

Sorry me old china, but it’s a no-go….

I’ve a 4 plus 2 with the same bathing platform/outboard arrangement, frees cockpit space but means you’re restricted to alongside mooring. But the vast majority of Broads mooring is alongside, even at Wroxham (Hoveton) and Loddon where it’s stern-to only there are alternatives not too far away. And not being able to moor at Ranworth is no biggie, mudweight in the Broad itself.

I have overcome the problem by bows to mooring, drop the mudweight astern (one from each quarter is even better). It can be more difficult getting on and off the boat but is more private, passers by can't stare into your living/bedroom.

PS Difficult to do single handed and make sure you don't foul the prop.
