How would a 5hp honda do on a shetland 535?

Hi John,

I think you will struggle with a 5hp on a 535 in all but the slackest water. It was recommended as a back up engine for my Family Four, just to give movement and steerage against the tide.
I assume you use your boat on rivers or canals, but I would think you should be looking at a 15hp at least. Others may disagree, so let's see if you get any other responses.

I have a Honda 5hp as a back engine on a Shetland 535 we go out to sea in lyme bay dorset and have used it to get us home hope this helps

for 95 % of the uk it is more than enough. we use Honda 2.3 hp as back up engines on shetland 570 up here. Other key point is weight. over 6hp is twin cylinders and v v heavy.

Thanks everyone for the replies! I am 15 years old and Just purchased my second boat, a shetland 535 for only £100. I don't have alot of money to spend on it but I am desperate to get out on the water. A family member has offered me a 5hp which he is not currently using. Just wondered if it would push it around and how fast it would do so.
