Hi is 40hp enough power for a 535

I intend to use her on the tidal thames in the canvey island, Southend on sea area for fishing.

The boat will be loaded with two 13 stone men and some fishing equipment

The cabin has been kept basic to keep weight down

It all depends what you want in terms of performance.

As you probably realise, I have been using a Johnson 35 this year and it has been fine on my 535 for most conditions. With me and my wife plus loaded with weekend gear, it will plane OK and get up to 16 or 17 knots fairly easily on calm water up and down the Thames tidal lower reaches.

A couple of weeks back I had four large (fat) blokes on board along with loads of fishing gear and bait and going through a good swell (4ft waves) on the South Coast, we were managing about 12 knots with the throttle wide open. It was slamming a bit but making way fine. The 35hp was probably at its limit of sensible usability in those conditions.

I reckon with two people, fishing gear and a 40hp you will be fine and get similar performance to my first scenario on a calm or very light sea, maybe a couple of knots extra top speed? It will be more than adequate for estuary fishing.
As a new boater in a slight sea with a good swell it may worry you a little but will get you home no bother. Not sure I would want to take a 535 out to a moderate or rough sea at all anyway, regardless of engine size.

Hi , I have a 535 Suntrip with a 40hp 4 stroke EFI mariner O/B. Using the GPS I pushed her through to 22 Knots .Granted the water was dead flat and i was the only one onboard (16 st...have to start that diet) This was on Lough Neagh N. Ireland

depends on your set up and how old the engine is ie weight loaded to the front where possible, keep the boat as light as you can etc. Also do a compression test as this will tell you if it is running like a 40 or if has lost some power.
