I have a shetland 570 with a 30hp engine and I want to replace it with a 4 stroke Yamaha 100hp which weighs about 180kg. Does anybody know if the transom will be able to take this weight?? The Shetland offical recommendation is a hp limit of 115 but this was in the 80s when it was all 2 stroke. All advise appreciated!!!

I have an old Shetland 570 and last year fitted a new Suzuki 70hp (thanks to an advice of Dave in Glasgow), which wheighs 165 kgs. The transom seems easily to bear this weight, however it takes at least 18knots to lift the transom up, so she can fly. This is why I bought a wing for the engine, and I hope she won't need that much speed to get on the flight. However, I am not sure if this will work, since she goes the same full speed (24knts) with or without an extra passenger.
The same Suzuki engine is available with 80 and 90 HP, aproximately at the same weight. I find 70HP fully sufficient, she goes 24 knots at 5500 revs (exactly the revs as recommended by Suzuki) with the standard prop. For the speed it does not matter if there is flat water or waves up to 50 cm here in the German north sea wash. You will need more than 70HP only if you want to go faster than 24knots.
