insurance need outboard lock

hi, ive been looking for insurance for our 535 and in the small print it states that the outboard should be secured with an anti theft device as well as its normal method of attachment, how does everybody else get around this problem.

An outboard lock can be bought from ebay for a reasonable price. Less than £30.00 depending on the size of the outboard.
I had one on the outboard on my last boat ( it was a 25hp mariner), i bought it because the outboard was small enough for 2 people to be able to carry it so it would have been easy for someone with his mate to steal.
The outboard i have now is a 60hp mercury and would need a forklift to lift it.
If the outboard you have is a 25hp or less, I would recommend buying a outboard lock just to be on the safe side

If any thief is determined your outboard will disappear whatever you put in place. I know of instance where despite locks etc they just sawed the transom off!!!

We have a Mercury 75 on our 570 that weighs a ton so good luck to them. I hope they get a hernia

For smaller more portable engines ,locks are not that expensive, and I know of another 570 owner that has his engine secured with one of those very heavy motorbike chains.

as you said a thief can just cut the engine off which would make a real mess of the boat, its just that the insurance small print says there must some kind of anti theft device. I might just say that I had one on if the engine goes walkies, at least then the transom will still be in one piece.

I have a normal lock on my 570, the type that covers the mounting levers. As the outboard is also bolted to the transom I back the lock up with stainless sheer nuts, the type that mount steering locks to cars, these are domed below the hexagonal part of the nut and the hexagon breaks off when the nut is tightened. A swine to get off when you need to remove the outboard but that is the object of them.

Apologiew but I am new to this forum so would have sent you an email if i could have worked it out. I read in one of your prevoius posts that you had an old steering system for a 570 that you might be persuaded to part with. Do you still have this? My swage on the cable is damaged where the end fitting is and is pulling through. Regards, Richard

Domed bolts and the addition of car style locking wheel nuts is probably the best you can do,but as sue has said if they want it they will chop the transom off with a chainsaw !.

This is also on the market http://www.smartwater.com/Personal.aspx but it still doesnt stop them from taking it in the first place.

When i fit my engine in april i will be using domed engine bolts with 4 x car locking wheel nuts then i am going to fibreglass them over,well its not like i am going to remove the engine again for a while.
Personally i would like to wire my engine up to the mains and give the theiving little barstewards a real shock !!!.
