Ok thanks for reply! Now it makes sense, I'll probably need to trim the door down a bit then as I've re-done the floor in my boat with 18mm marine ply and I feel its probably a little higher than it was originally.

Thanks for that, yes I know about the tapered ends - my plan was to cut in half and remove a section from the middle of the pole, then mig weld it back together, grind/polish.

Yes, that ball arrangement and having to adjust to centre, a bit fiddly IMO. Prefer the standard cable-through arrangement.
