New Engine, Bad Vibrations!

Hi all, we are fairly new (second year) owners of a 535. We had a brand new Mercury 15hp 4 stroke engine fitted to the boat earlier this year. Unfortunately, it has made the boat vibrate very badly. The engineer who fitted it has tried and so far failed to get to the bottom of the problem.
Has anyone else had an issue with this, and if so, did they find a solution? Many thanks

well the good news is ..... all engines shake just like when you open up the bonnet of a car. So like cars you need to look at why it is vibrating to much and the rubbers in the case is not dampening this down. It could also be due to a warn part holiding the engine to the transum bracket or the transum bracket or badley fitted.

Either way if the engines is running well which the dealer should know , you should look for play in the engine to the case, to the mounting, to the transum. good luck

Thanks, we will look at your suggestions. The thing which is baffling us is that vibration was not an issue with the old engine, which was a 30+ year old bone shaker.
There must be a solution, still hoping to find it!

Had same problem with pilot boat turned out to be the prop

Hi,

Bad vibration from an outboard is usually down to either a damaged prop, a bent drive shaft in the gear box or even a cylinder not firing. Not what you would expect from a brand new engine, and a good engineer should be able to spot any of those problems pretty quickly.

Hi,

I'd stick with pushing the guy who has already taken your money, if you get someone else to do anything to the engine, you could end up losing your statutary rights from the seller.

Hi There, Have you asked at the boatyard if you could try the engine on another boat.Then you be able to tell if the problem is with the engine or your boat.

Bloke says he tried a different engine on our boat and it had the same problem.

Anyone got any ideas what it could be on our boat that is causing this?

Hi There, whatever the problem is it wants fixing. Find a reputable Merc dealer and ask if you can book the boat and engine in an get a full report on what the cause is. It should not cost you that much. Say a couple of hrs labour and then you will know for sure what the problem is.
